“Please go away often,” they say. And they'll help you: phone service for airline and train tickets, hotel reservations, vacation packages, and car rentals. Beware, they charge a $50 service fee for airline tickets, $35 for AmEx cardholders; you're better off heading elsewhere for tickets. Instead, come here for their more useful services: currency exchange, travelers checks, and passport photos. Upstairs, financial service offers currency exchange with a $3-5 fee and on-the-spot AmEx Travelers' Cheques (1% fee, no fee for AmEx cardholders). Passport photos $8/2

It may not be particularly charming or spotlessly clean, but its central location makes the mid-priced Harvard Square Hotel a perennial favorite. The 73 singles and doubles have TV, wireless internet, refrigerators, hair dryers, irons, and ironing boards. Singles and doubles $119-269; rooms $300+ during Commencement (3-night minimum). Generally, book 2 weeks in advance; around Harvard University's Commencement week, though, make reservations 2 years ahead (deposit due 1 year in advance). Guests also have access to the not-so-nearby YMCA facilities (820 Mass. Ave.). Discounts available for AAA, AARP, and Harvard affiliates on official business. Parking available ($17/day, overnight $27/night). 4 rooms with wheelchair access.

Formerly CarlsonWagonlit Travel, this conveniently located agency is a worldwide travel leader. They cater to everyone from students traveling on shoestring budgets (they have ISIC cards) to businessmen on corporate accounts. They can help you with flights, hotels, and anything in between, and offer special student rates online. The automated-phone routine is circular and unhelpful unless you know your party's extension, so it's best to check out prices online or stop by the agency.

Easily the most luxurious hotel in the Square, “The Charles” doesn't come cheap. Standard rates hover in the $200s during the mid-season and hit the high $500s during Commencement (reservations open the Monday following the previous Commencement and often sell out in days). The friendly, unpretentious service has welcomed guests from the Dalai Lama to Avril Lavigne. Giant pillows and comfy quilts ensure a good night's beauty sleep; other amenities include Bose wave radios, 2-line phones, mini-bars, and 24hr room service. Don't forget to ask for a partial river view for no extra charge. Guests also have access to the Wellbridge health club and indoor pool. Three restaurants—Rialto, Legal Seafoods, and Henrietta's Table—cater to the Cantabrigian elite, while The Regattabar and Noir keep them friendly and tipsy.

The hotel offers baby furniture, a Kids Kit Welcome amenity, classic board games, children's books (including the entire Curious George collection) from their library and local bookstores, a night light, outlet protectors, and an in-room dining menu designed for the young palate. Wellbridge Athletic Club, located adjacent to the hotel has an indoor, rooftop pool with designated children's hours. For special events and family packages throughout the year, visit the hotel's website.
In the winter, lace up and enjoy ice skating on the 2,900 square-foot outdoor rink right in Harvard Square. The rink, run by the hotel, is open to the public as well as hotel guests.
Public restroom: Straight up the stairs and to the right on the first floor.

STA really is the one-stop travel shop for students. Having built up a loyal following of students addicted to the helpful staff and great bargains, STA provides Eurail and Britrail passes, ISIC and ISIS cards ($22), around-the-world ticket packages, and hostel memberships ($28). But the best reason to come is for their low, low airfares, which are usually refundable or changeable for a small fee. You can check out their great fares on the STA website, but it's best to speak to an agent directly. STA also offers language courses abroad and adventure tours, as well as the ever-popular spring break packages.

Located opposite Lamont Library, The Inn at Harvard offers luxurious accommodations at a location that couldn't be more central. Original works of art from the Harvard University Art Museums decorate the skylit atrium, a warm welcome to the bright rooms that lie just beyond the vaulted entrance. For Commencement (roughly $350/night and a minimum 3-night stay), make plans 4 years in advance. Reservations accepted beginning Freshman Week. (“Do try and graduate in 4 years, sweetie, or Mommy and Daddy are going to forfeit their hotel room deposit.”) The Inn at Harvard's 113 elegant rooms with queen or double beds go for $150-200 in the winter and $170-360 in the summer. Three junior suites and 1 presidential suite are available. High speed wireless internet in all rooms. Underground parking available for $30/night.
